Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Identify operational processes, plant and equipment
   • Obtain, interpret and confirm work requirements
   • Access, interpret and apply documentation required to identify and rectify site operating problems
   • Identify the links and effects on site processes, outputs, plant and equipment according to workplace procedures
   • Identify the operating characteristics and limitations of site processes and plant and equipment according to workplace procedures
   • Identify the process flow and interaction between site processes and plant and equipment according to workplace procedures
   • Locate site process routes and associated plant and equipment
   • Identify the function and location of process control systems or centres
   • Identify health and safety requirements and controls
   • Identify environmental requirements for site processes and plant and equipment
2. Monitor plant and equipment performance
   • Obtain, read and interpret the monitoring program and schedule
   • Confirm the monitoring program and schedule with relevant personnel
   • Monitor and interpret indicators, operations and shift reports, records and verbal information to identify faults and malfunctions
   • Monitor and inspect site plant and equipment to identify operating problems and malfunctions
   • Monitor site processes, plant or equipment malfunctions and implement emergency shutdown procedures according to job requirements
   • Monitor health and safety controls
   • Monitor environmental controls for site processes, plant and equipment
3. Maintain plant and equipment performance
   • Adjust plant and equipment controls where required according to workplace procedures
   • Communicate site processes and plant and equipment faults/malfunctions to relevant personnel as required
   • Maintain health and safety controls
   • Maintain environmental controls for site processes, plant and equipment
   • Report problems and malfunctions, and actions taken according to workplace procedures

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

identify and rectify site operating problems on at least two occasions, including:

monitoring plant and equipment performance according to monitoring programs

confirming and clarifying information from others to identify faults, problems or malfunctions

applying diagnostic and fault finding techniques when visually and physically inspecting plant and equipment

determining plant and equipment problems and malfunctions

adjusting plant and equipment to maintain optimum performance and function

identifying plant and equipment problems that require emergency shutdown procedures

rectifying problems within capability and reporting activity

reporting problems outside of capability and performing activities as instructed

reporting on problems and malfunctions

maintaining plant and equipment records.

During the above, the candidate must:

locate and apply relevant documentation, policies and procedures and confirm that the work activity is compliant

implement the requirements, procedures and techniques for identifying and rectifying site operating problems,

work effectively with others to identify and rectify site operating problems, in a way that meets all required outcomes

communicate clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions and to determine coordination requirements prior to commencing and during work activities.

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

operational procedures related to processes, plant and equipment carried out by the operator

site communication procedures and systems
